While submitting their application, applicants include all of their previous work experience in the trade; once this is verified, they are then booked for their written and practical examinations. There is no training requirement for the Qualification program, and interpreters are permitted during examinations. From the application submittal date, applicants have 18 months to complete all the program requirements, which awards a Qualification Certificate.
Some Provinces will allow you to work as an Alberta Licensed Journeyman Barber. You will need to check with the local jurisdictions to see what is accepted.
The difference between the two trades is the scope of work that each are able to perform. Barbers are able to perform: shampooing, cutting, shaving, and trimming; and these tasks can be performed on males or females. Hairstylists are able to perform all of the tasks of a Barber, as well as additional tasks such as: perms, colouring, extensions, and wigs and hairpieces.
